Mary was born in Crewkerne in Somerset where she was baptised on 23rd April 1789. He parents were Robert Austin and Phebe (nee
Down). She had at least 3 brothers and 1 sister.
She married Stephen Rue in Martock in Somerset on 21st August 1821. They then appear to have moved to Long Sutton, where
Stephen was from, to have their children.
They had 4 children, Mary Ann born in 1822, William born in 1825 and twins, Jacob and Esau born in 1830, although Esau
appears not to have survived.
Sometime between 1830 and 1841, they moved from Long Sutton to Pitney, Somerset.
Mary can be seen in 1841 (aged 45), 1851 (aged 63) and 1861 (age 66) census returns. She didn’t have an occupation,
although her husband was an agricultural labourer, often listed as a fish dealer.
Mary died on 24th November 1870 – her age at death was given as 83 years old (not a bad life since her husband Stephen
only died 2 years earlier, aged about 70!). She died in Pitney of “gradual decay” and the death was registered by her daughter in law, Emma Rue.
