Mary was baptised in Pitney, Somerset on 30th May 1869. She was the seventh child born to Jacob Rue and Emma (nee Ball).
In the 1871 cesnsus Mary was with her parents, 4 older brothers and one of her older sisters, in Pitney. She was aged 2.
In 1881 she was still with Jacob & Emma in Pitney. Aged 12 with 2 older and 2 younger brothers, she was a scholar.
In 1891 Mary Rue was 22 an unmarried domestic servant serving in the house of Adam & Margaret Sherrin in High Ham, Somerset. The house appears to be a farm.
On 20th December 1894 Mary married William Hawker. Her brother, Tom Rue was one of the witnesses. William’s family were from High Ham.
By the census in 1901, Mary Hawker was 29, William was 33 and a “carterman” on farm. They had two daughters, Lily aged 5 and Dorothy aged 2. They lived on Main Street in High Ham.
In the 1911 census they were living in Stout, High Ham. William was 42 a farm labourer, Mary was 40. They had 6 children, although only 5 at home as Lily had already left. Dorothy was 12, Sydney was 9, Jesse was 6, Elsie 3 and George 2.
They went on to have two further children, Elizabeth in 1911 and William in 1915.
I do have some limited further information on what happened to these children, although as they were not Rue’s it is not contained here.
I have not found record of Mary after 1915, although it appears that her husband, William may have died in 1918.
